Honors #4

Taking honors really opened my eyes to the real world, because I usually don’t like taking challenges and it made me understand that I have to take challenges to accomplish certain things in life. It made me feel inspired to take more challenges so I can become a successful young lady and it pushes me to do better and strive.

I would of went over the requirements and did more than needed instead of doing the minimum, honors has helped me in many ways and I will keep moving on with this experience.

Take honors again and go over and beyond the requirements and do what I need to do.

I want to learn more about slavery and things related to that, because it fascinates me and I love to learn about things that are related to topics about how they got here and what happened and how it happened.

Honors #3

Today in America, there are many agencies like the one Roosevelt wanted to make after the Wall Street Crash in 1929. People who are struggling always seem to find a way with help whether it’s help with financial problems, food or housing. Roosevelt was a significant person and he helped a lot and wanted to see people working and succeeding, when everyone lost their jobs he wanted to start the New York State Emergency Relief Commission with Harry Hopkins, it was meant for people out of work and too old to work. This is similar to a lot of things in America now, like Medicare in a way. Because if you are too old and can’t work then you don’t get benefits and you don’t have the money to accomplish things needed. It’s also like Workmens Comp , because people who get hurt on the job and won’t get better until a few months later can’t afford housing and food. So thankfully there is an organization that helps people get back on their feet.

Slavery in America has been going on for years; people have lost their lives, have been beaten and hung for the color of their skin. People have also lost their lives trying to help these slaves make a run for the good life. Slavery in America just as well as in any other place in the world was a bad dream you had to wake up from, these slaves were hated, spat on and treated like an animal. The fire of slavery still burns today, in many ways. There are still people who don’t like any other race but theirs. "We will be ourselves and free, or die in the attempt.”-Alice Walker
There have been heroes who have tried to helped and have succeeded but have lost their lost trying to help, in World War II there were also people who have lost lives and loved ones helping. World War II had a huge affect on the world. People were killed because of not being of “importance.” But does helping get you? It leaves you dead. Slavery has been an important event in American history and people’s lives.
Interview Part
My mom has told me many stories about even when she was growing up, she said she remembers seeing white people looking at her crazy and the rebellious flag on people’s car. My mom grew up in Arkansas in the 70’s, she always told my siblings and I that we shouldn’t acknowledge the past. Meaning just because there was chaos and things going on with my ancestors we shouldn’t be upset at people that are living now because they had nothing to do with it. She said multiple times that “History is how we learn our lessons” and I look up to her for saying that because it means something and I’m glad she is teaching us to not grow up to be angry at people who did nothing to us.

1. I feel that even as bad as I thought I did, I realized I actually took time and did what I had to do to get my work done and this piece of writing is something I can be proud of.

2. I think I have developed some writing tips and realized how important they are .

3. I would get a little more creative, because I realize anybody could of did what I did in my paper .

4. It makes me want to try harder, bacause I know it's hard to do. But you have to get your work done and do what you do.

So my character is Ellen Clauson and she is a single mother of two living in New York, One of her daughter's has autism and the other needs a heart transplant. So her main priority is to ask for an expansion on the SCHIP program. Because technically she making "too much money" to qualify for SCHIP, but she can't afford health care plans so she is stuck in the middle with no way out of getting what they need.

I want to win, I want to get an expansion on SCHIP.

I plan to talk to each senator democrat or republican, to try to get what I want passed so my children adn I can survive.

I'm working with senator Charles Shcumer, to get what I want passed in the bill he is proposing. (Marlene plays Charles)

Obama's Health care will make the nation go bankrupt, I think it is right for health care to be provided to all that cannot afford it. We all pay taxes so we all pay for health care. So what's the big deal? Why can't the United States of America make more money just for health care? There are so many questions about health care and why America is in such a debt, it gives me a headache because I have healthcare covered by the government but sometimes I feel likes it's unfair that I get free health care but people who are sturuggling more than my family is doesn't.

The government is controlled by power. When everyone is giving power then everyone feels the need to jump in and act as if they know what they are doing and what should be done. In these articles people state their opinions and the problems but noone states specific simple reasons to help the debt we are in. What should we do? Cutting off our health care or not giving people it will not helo the debt we are in. There will still be problems! As of right now there are being budgets cut from school and police departments, because what we need are schools and police departments. Reading these articles make my brain think about simple things that could be changed to stop the necessary cuting. I feel like after hearing both sides of the arguement i realize that there is so much more to it than just the side I want to hear. For example in article 4 Joel A. Harrison states "By any measure, the United States spends an enormous amount of money on health care. Here are a few of those measures. In 2006, U.S. health care spending exceeded 16% of the nation’s GDP. To put U.S. spending into perspective: the United States spent 15.3% of GDP on health care in 2004, while Canada spent 9.9%, France 10.7%, Germany 10.9%, Sweden 9.1%, and the United Kingdom 8.7%. Or consider per capita spending: the United States spent $6,037 per person in 2004, compared to Canada at $3,161, France at $3,191, Germany at $3,169, and the U.K. at $2,560."

It is obvious that the U.S. spends a lot of money but the point is what are these people doing to help our problem?

After reading these articles, it has changed how I looked at the world: Nothing is FREE! This true in many cases, because there are things yu have to do to recieve the things that are free. There is paperwork and so much one would have to do to even qualify for things you may need such as healthcare. America I feel sometimes is so focused on this "need" of money that we overlook people who actually can't do for themselves. Or they can do for themselves but just can't do as much, for example I have insurance that covers a lot and I don't have to pay anything, but if I didn't then it would be impossible for me to pay for it because I have a single mother and she no longer works so there would be no possible way for me and my family to afford the medical expenses, I think sometimes that people who have money and have good insurance then they think insurance isn't good just because they can afford it. But even though I do have insurance I'm grateful because I know if I didn't have it then it would be a totally different situation.

In the first article I think that he obviously is like every other American that has the same problem because it's either living on the streets because you can't afford health care or dying. Which do you want do participate in?

PART ONE BLOG!
There are many health care ways to go about it:
*Public Health care
-Federal Employees Health Benefits Program
-Indian Health Care
-Medicaid
-Medicare
-Military health System/TRICARE
-State Chilldren's Health Insurance Program(SCHIP)
-Veterans Health Administration

*Private Health Care
-Health insurance in the United States
-Consumer-driven health care
+Flexible spending account (FSA)
+Health reimbursement account
+Health savings account
+High-deductible health plan (HDHP)
+Medical savings account
-Managed care
-Health maintenance organization (HMO)
-Preferred provider organization (PPO)
-Medical underwriting

Health Care has been a hassle for many years because the government wants to keep health care and keep it running on the service and funds it is now, but then some think that the government should cut the funds to a more reasonable price. Many people who recieve health care from the government have to pay little or no coat for times when they need dental of medical help. Some people get health care from the government, some pay it out of pocket(FULL cost) and some get it at work. It's hard to get health care because for example who are immigrants and stuff they can't afford it and don't want to be deported so they don't go to the doctors. There are many cases dealing with health care. There are health care services that apply to certain people, like seniors people with dissabilities, families with children or employers. It could apply to people who have certain problems that others don't and I believe tat why thr government always has different opinions because I might have cancer but someone else might and we have to go by the government's health care that they give to us and it becomes tough for them.

PART TWO BLOG!

1. I think a compelling character is someone with a desire, specific description and someone who goes through conflicts and seeks solutions but has to go through a series of problems so he/she can find a way to end what they need to.

2. I think an interesting plot is one that has problems and reaches a climax and has a resolution. For example Harry potter, he lives in a closet and has to deal with rude people just so he can overcome his fears and find his true self, as he goes to Hogwarts he figures out that he is the chosen one and he deals with many different problems so he can become what he has wanted to be, a normal person.

3. I believe they take an extra step to make their writing something that everyone will understand in their won way and won't have a problem with understanding, when I read Their Eyes Were Watching God it was a south-based book about a young girl who was forced to get married at an early age and move off a lot of unwanted places to be with the ones she were in love with at the time. During the entire book the dialogue was very difficult, starting at the beginning of the book I really didn't understand a lot but during the middle of the book I started to understand what was going on and how it was going on. So with that being said, I think it's good sometimes to have some dialogue that may be confusing and slang.

4. I think that authors take simple steps like making a character that relates to the reader in simple, different ways and things they can know the character feels when certain situations occur. Another way I think is because sometimes the author uses sad ways to pull the reader in like for example if the character got pregnant and couldn't take care of it and had to give it up for adoption. Would be a great way, because then it almost seems like the reader gets attached to the character by the things they had to go through.

So my topic is Birth Control and I'm not really sure what stage birth control would go under because it could be adult hood and adolesense. But I think it will be better under adolesense because a lot of people are bias about whether it should be avaliable to teenagers and other help that for example Planned Parent Hood helps with.

Right now I believe there are a lot of stories about how Planned Parent Hood's services aren't the best thing and people are upset with what they do and how they carry their services. I think birth control is a great service because it gives females optons and Planned Parent Hood offers great services and they give you a great opportunity. Here is one story about Planned Parent Hood and birth control. In this link in 1968 Pope Paul VI argued that it is wrong to prevent a human being from being born. Check the links on the bottom ot this blog.

Birth control has been around since 1900 B.C in Egypt according to I believe that for a preventable medicine to be around for so long that people have not had problems with is amazing because it takes courage for people who believe birth control is a way out because they have to deal with parents who might be upset about their daughters getting services at Planned Parent Hood. There are many times that birth control and Planned Parent Hood has took the heat many times for doing what they feel is right.

I really believe that birth control and other services at Planned Parent Hood to find out more click the link below.

I want a big office, I like the excitement of everyone walkign around talking and acting as if they were busy. I like to be alone sometimes, just because I choose to not have people around me that could possibly distract me. I actually don't want to work with animals even though I love them and enjoy being around them I just choose to work with humans. I like to help people a lot and my ideal job is to be a pyschologist at an abuse hospital, because certain people who have been through serious situations can relate more than someone who hasn't.

I think I am capable of pretty much everything and I can put myself in a situation and will be able to incorparate certain skills I have to get my work done and stuff. I think certain skills I can offer to school, work or just about anywhere are the capability to be serious when needed. But I can offer that smile when needed, I am a great person who can sit down and listen to anything someone would have to say.

Well over the summer I worked with a magazine called The Chocolate Voice Magazine, which started out in Arizona in 2007 and during that time I designned articles for the magazine and interviewed an actress by the name of CiCi Foster. It was a completly different experience for me because I never imagined myself working for something so serious, i learned a lot about being professional and knowing when to have fun. i really enjoyed my time and I would love to do it again. I actually was thinking about doing my interniship there.

The Mock Trial notes!

"From a vote of 10-1, we the jury find the state of Arizona guilty for violation of the spirit of America's immigration history through AZ SB1070 and HB2162."

Case: Violation of the spirit of America's immigrant history through AZ SB1070 and HB2162.

Prosecuting Lawyers: Evanglyn B. and Noah S.
Alex Machado: James Madison
Eric Holder: Siarah Loyld
Raul Rivalva: Jeffery Acera

Defending Lawyers: Erica S. and Kayta B.
Jane Bruea: William Wright
John McCain: Brandi Coley
Kenneth L. Colling: Jose Gonzalez

DAY ONE:

James Madison

Prosecuting
James Madison was the author of the Declaration of Independence, was born March 16, 1751 and died June 28, 1836. "No state can deny any person in jurisdiction" he says when asked by Noah. He also says 1,000's of immigrants have traveled here through Elis Island back in the day and now it's a different story. Now they are coming from all over. He mentions many different quotes from the Constitution(4th, 5th and 14th amendment).

Defense
Erica mentions a quote by James Madison about illegal immigrants, " If you are not here legally we have the right to remove you!" -James Madison(Earlier time). "Yes, I said that but I mean we can remove someone not legal from the United Sates but we will not go off racially profiling people by the way they look." said James Madison. He also said that if he could write the law, he would include no racial profiling!
Quotes and other notes from Madison:
-"Without adding to the strength or wealth of this country those are not the people we want."
-"If you are not here legally we have the right to remove you!"
-Madison put a law on labors who do not work in agriculture.
More for James Madison, click HERE!

Eric Holder

Prosecuting
Eric Holder is the U.S. attorney General, he gives advice and answers questions when asked by people of the Government. When the Government filled a lawsuit against Jane Bruea on July 6, 2010 he did not read the law so he would only know about the case by what people have told him. He thinks that the law is violating amendments 4,5 and 14, life, liberty and property and the Supremacy law. He thinks the state laws must abide by the federal laws and Constitution. He says the congress have the power over border, so if Jane thinks she can appose that rule then she is wrong. He seems to think that the passing of California's 187 bill is similar to Arizona's SB1070 law in a few ways.

Defense

He state he doesn't believe the law is necessarily racist he just feels they could state it in a Different way and try not to make it seem like they are racially profiling. He does mention filling a second law on Arizona, but the jury starts to think why file a second law if you supposedly see anything about the law being racist.

Raul Rialva

Prosecuting

He mentions a few times an organization called Operation Wetback, which wanted to help remove one million illegal immigrants from the united states. He was born three years after his parents immigrated to the United States. He mentioned a young lady by the name of Maria who was thrown to the ground by six officers for supposedly not having a valid I.D. and for forging someone's identity, she suffered a broken arm and was not received medical attention until 20 hours later. In the end the truth came out and Maria was actually telling the truth and was set free. He states the Jim Crow laws. "If we can fight Jim Crow we can fit again!"

Defense

Raul was accused of boycotting Arizona which was causing a decrease in Arizona's economy, but he fights back saying with the help and attention on this law it will do damage but will be cleaned up fast enough for Arizona to be back on track. He does say the law is racially profiling people for the way they look, but immigrants do need to get legal documentation.

Jane Bruea

Defense
Jane is the governor of Arizona, she was the one who signed SB1070. She believed the federal government was not doing there job and she had to take the stand to make the people of Arizona happy and do what's right. She said Arizona does NOT have a border fence like California and Texas do. She says there is about 80 miles of land which keep Mexico and Arizona apart, there is a fence but it's small enough for a toddler to climb over. (See picture above)

Prosecuting
Many people think the law is about racially profiling someone who an officer can THINK is an illegal immigrant. Well first she says someone has to commit a crime and if they do not have the proper identification and they:
-Have poor English
-Portray nervousness
-Wearing layers of clothing
-Wearing baggy clothes
-Sees people walking in a straight line
Then they are profiled as an illegal immigrant. She goes on to say this is not racially profiling but the jury sees this as being the best way to racially profile. She does believe that illegal immigration will never be a permanent solution but there are little things that officers can do to prevent it. She goes on to say that since this law have been announced the crime rate has gone down, so the lawyers think is she implying that immigrants are the only people in Arizona committing crimes? "Enforcing this bill will stop crime and then will have more tourists because no one wants to go somewhere they don't feel safe. Jane does mention that she was NOT voted by the people to be governor nor did the people of Arizona vote for this law. " Since I have passed the law my approving rate has went up to 48%." Jane says. "So does that mean 52% doesn't approve?" Noah asks. She said she feels that if the people of Arizona did not feel she was doing her job then they would be complaining. She also mentions how she feels that illegal immigrants take our tax dollars by going to hospitals, letting their kids go to our school and taking our jobs.
Quotes from Jane:
-"People who come here illegally do not have the same rights that an United States citizen has, such as life, liberty and property."
-"By coming to America illegally you are committing a crime."

DAY TWO:

Jane Bruea

Prosecuting
As prosecution goes on with their cross examination, Jane still thinks that state laws should override federal laws because the federal government doesn't always know what's going on. Prosecution asks Jane what she thinks an illegal immigrant looks like. She answers " I can't define what they look like, but there are certain ways they can be portrayed." She goes on to say she thinks immigration is a national problem and it's the federal governments job to take care of that but since they can't she will.

John McCain

Defense
John McCain is the senator of Arizona, he does support SB1070, he thinks that this bill will discourage aliens to enter the United States illegally. He doesn't see a problem with immigrants he just feels if you want to come to America then you should wait in line and get your legal documentation. He talked about the Ten Point Border Plan which he and John Kyle organized to combat aliens.

Prosecution
"They should not be treated like Unites State citizens because they break the federal law." - John McCain He says he believes that illegal immigrants do cause problems, they might not be the majority of the crime but they are still here illegally committing crimes they should not be committing. He says he believes the federal government is suing Arizona because it interferes with federal law, when in all actuality it doesn't. He uses the example of gangs and how if they look a certain way and are dressed a certain way and look suspicious then officers have the right to take that into their hands and make a decision.

Kenneth L. Collings

Defense
Kenneth was a sheriff in Arizona until he was shot dean in 1988. He died trying to arrest two illegal immigrants, he believes that if the borders were secure and i f there was a law like this before then he would still be alive. He is asked to define concurrent enforcement and he answers "It's when the federal and state share power." He says that when an officer thinks someone is committing a crime they do have the right to take them in for questioning.

Prosecution
Noah states that in his death report they just mention the men being Mexico natives, so no one states them being illegal immigrants. It was another assumption. He says that if a person commits a crime, doesn't have proper identification and doesn't speak English well then they will be labeled as an illegal immigrant and taken in for questioning.

Closing statements were presented and at the end of this mock trial my mind was definitely changed because I din;t realize both sides of the case and as I did, I just assumed that Arizona was wrong. After this trial I do believe that Arizona has some truth and good evidence to why they did what they did and after hearing their side anyone would have to understand that. Both sides did a very good job of getting information, evidence and witnesses to plead their case and try to explain in their best ways to the jury why they are right.

I was left with a few questions and comments:
-Why can't Arizona just build a fence hire officers to secure and move on?
-The prosecuting side needed to clarify a little more.
-I would of liked more clarification about the actual law, like someone reading parts of the law so the jury could of had a better understanding.

Well that's it.

"From a vote of 10-1, we the jury find the state of Arizona guilty for violation of the spirit of America's immigration history through AZ SB1070 and HB2162."

About Miceal Westerman

Guthrie, Kentucky a place where races are separated and you are forbidden to step out of your boundaries, on January 14, 1995 that was changed. A young white man by the name of Micheal Westerman was shot and killed for riding around in a mostly black neighborhood with the confederate flag whipping on the back of his truck, a few young black guys saw him before in their neighborhood asking black people if they wanted to have some chicken and go swimming. Stories have been passed generations to generations about white people not liking black people and this generalization that people of different races have to stay on different sides of the line.
Hannah Westerman (Micheal’s wife) left alone with twins and hatred against the people who left her with what she has to live with for the rest of her life, “They got what they deserved-well, they deserved to die.” Hannah has to deal with the hurtful pain of looking in the closet and not seeing Micheal’s clothes or looking at their twins and seeing Micheal’s face. But there is something that just doesn’t make any sense, I could understand that any wife who just lost their husband would be mad but it seems like there is a little more to this flag then people seem. She said many times “The flag was red, the truck was red. They matched.” But it seems like everywhere they go white people are going to mention the flag and its meaning so I’m pretty sure that Micheal has heard about the flag and what it meant many times. There were also some allegations about someone screaming “nigger” outside of Micheal’s car, but Hannah testified saying that never happened and they lied. Were their witnesses around? What really happened?
Freddie Morrow (The shooter) grew up with a single mother in the descent part of Chicago. Then after his mom lost her job they were forced to move were they could afford to have a roof over their heads and not have to be on the streets. Since the move Freddie’s mother (Cynthia Batie) started to realize a change in Freddie from the nights of coming in late to the mysterious girls talking about how Freddie got them pregnant and other people Cynthia had to deal with, Cynthia sent Freddie off to Guthrie to shape him up. When Freddie arrived in Guthrie everything was fine he met a nice girl and started to attend church with her family, and then he came face-to-face with a bad group on the other side of town that wasn’t there to help him. On January 14, 1995 he was going to do something that would get him locked up in a cage like a bird for the rest of his life, one of his friends Damien Daren told him about this racist white guy that needed to be taken care of. “BOOM” instantly a life was taken.
There was so many different about what really happened, what started this? Who started this?

The Civil War Today!

So I decided to talk about a few situations because I’m interested in things like this so:
One was the thing that I felt so completely made me feel sick, so a young women by the name of Bethany Storro flew acid in her face just to say she was attacked by an African-American. It is amazing how people can make up these stories just to say someone of a darker skin tone has committed a crime of no reason.

Check this out she is really CRAZY!

Article!

So I read the article about legalizing marijuana, because so many politicians and representatives think it will sooner or later so there is no point of trying to avoid the situation since it will be bound to happen. In the article it mentioned how hard it is to find an elective that has not used drugs, so what makes it okay for them to use it and no someone out in the streets? It also mentions how the writer of the article believes that bad behavior should be punished and not the use of marijuana.
” It is hard to find even an elected official who hasn't used marijuana or other illegal drugs. President Obama used drugs. Former President George W. Bush made taped comments that many interpreted as indicating he did too. Then there's Bill Clinton, who famously said he smoked pot but didn't inhale. Al Gore, Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin admit they used drugs. ” Says Bill Piper.
I think this ties back into where different branches have different powers and how I think when a bill or law wants to be passed it takes sincere thinking and knowledge about what you are voting one because for example the voting on the women’s museum, I feel like there is always people’s different opinions but there is always people who just votes on something they have no knowledge about and I think that’s wrong because there are people who need access to marijuana but can’t because they might not qualify to the requirements and that’s wrong!
My interests in this topic are how much people look at the bad sides of marijuana and not what it can actually be used for, it would help the economy other small businesses.

American Icons #7

1. I think a few things stand out like the way a am able to understand certain things, because sometimes I have to be shown how to do something then it has to be explained because that way it will be a better understanding of that. But you have done a good job of that!

2.I like the entuiasim and how everybody can pretty much find their way in the class, and doesn't have a problem with how it is being teached or what peopel will have to say about what will be said.

3.I can continue to have an open mind and not be afraid to ask questions and just get my work done and do it the best way possible.

4.Like I said before I want to keep an open mind to all opinions because if I don't then I will only feel like what I'm saying is right and I can't make that a habit. I will also try to do my work to the best ability because without that then I will just be settling for the passing grade and not what will make me a better writer or student.

5.I hope to continue to do what I'm doing, which is doing my work and doing it to my best ability!

American Icons ` Finaleeeee !

My finale picture:

My finale artist statement:
Madam CJ Walker
Shyana Brown
Madam CJ Walker: born into a world of hate, racism and differences. Shyana Nicole Brown: born into a world of hate, racism and differences. Two different people but both with the same dream: to be successful and change the world.
I was born on August 18, 1994. I was forced upon a single mother, with three other kids. My siblings and I were all left with no father, but one strong African-American mother who knew how to give her kids the strength, faith and hope they needed to succeed. From the age of seven years old to the age ten, I experienced what has changed my life in so many ways, good and bad. Good because with what happened to me I can help others and bad because it has scarred me and as much as I don't want to look back I know it will always be there. Even with this burden on my shoulders I have managed to get through life with no regrets or revenge, because I know where I have been, where I'm going and what I have to do to get there. Going through many different situations from not having food in my house to meeting new people that would just hurt me; I had one devoted mother who has helped me not be another "lost black child" in America. I only saw my father once when I was little. I thought about why God made me father-less and why every other little girl could be called daddy's little girl but not me. Was it the way the I looked, my mother or maybe it was him? Like Madam CJ Walker I have been through different trials and trivializations, but like her I don't want to be left behind. Madam CJ Walker has been the crutches to many black women who couldn't walk on their own two feet, she knew that being a slave and having no parents was no reason for her to not accomplish her dreams, she wanted to go beyond that and so will I. I have to teach my children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews that being African-American is nothing to be ashamed of; instead you have to strive and succeed. Madam CJ has devoted herself to many causes as I wish to do one day. After the Bloody East St. massacre Madam Walker devoted her time and money to trying to make lynching a federal crime, it takes strength to put your own life in danger. I want to do the same, after I accomplish my goals I want to succeed in more. I want to give back and be the crutch of others, I realize that is what God wants to be my duty and I shall listen.
I try everyday to be the crutches for the young women around me, I have been around a lot of bad situations but the eagerness in my heart refuses to let me fall back. Coming from a single mother and looking at the struggles she had to go through I am glad that I can be her crutch. My mother has not had the opportunity to see one of her children graduate, me being the third oldest of four children I realize, this is our success. I will rise up for all those who couldn't and change the world. I have had many people in my life tell me to just stop because I wouldn't make anything of myself, but I can laugh in their face because this is my story and there is more to come.
"I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations....I have built my own factory on my own ground." –Madam CJ Walker

American Icons #5

*I think the aspect of my artist statement that has been the most successful for me is the way I put my writing into the format, because a lot of people think that my format should not be in the way it is. I decided to write a biography at Madam CJ Walker then write a biography at me, because I feel like we relate with our backgrounds and we have stories that we can show to the world, but I think I might still have a lot to work to do.

*I think the writing tips that have helped me might be the Loop, because I think that with the format I have makes the loop at the end beause the reader is not really sure about what the story is about.

*I think the most challenging part is tryinng to make it more "story-like" because Randy thinks that I am kind of clueless about what I really trying to talk about.

*I think trying to tie all of the tips into my paper because it would be better and I would be able to grade myself better.

*I am currently workinng on ALL of it, so if you can help me leave a comment!

Madam CJ Walker: born into a world of hate, racism and differences. Shyana Nicole Brown: born into a world of hate, racism and differences.

Two different people but both with the same dream: to be successful and change the world.

Madam CJ Walker was born as Sarah Breedlove in December 23, 1867. She became an orphan when her parents died when she was only seven. To escape an epidemic of the yellow fever, which caused the death of her parents, and having to deal with an abusive brother-in-law, she married her first husband, Moses McWilliams at the age 14. She later became pregnant with her first child Leila (later known as A ‘Leila Walker.) When Leila was two years old her father Moses died. This made Madam CJ marry again to John Davis in 1894. That marriage ended in 1910 and then she married once again to Charles Joseph Walker. Madam CJ was a strong and devotional woman. She moved to Denver, Colorado were she started to realize a small baldness problem, which she knew other African-American women were going through because of the lack of products made for black women, because of racism. She had started to work on a solution not just for her but for all African-American women who faced this problem. In 1906 her and her husband toured the country promoting their products and their training sales agents. From 1908 through 1910 Charles and CJ operated a beauty training school, the Leila College for Walker Hair Culturists. She was soon known as the first African-American millionaire. She became inspirational to many black women because of her wealth and success, and she made it possible for all those who couldn't walk on their own two feet. After the bloody East St. Louis Race Riot of 1917, she devoted herself to make lynching a federal crime. In 1918 she was the keynote speaker at many NAACP events helping raise funds for the anti-lynching movement across the Midwest and East. She also encouraged other African-American to support black veterans in WWI. She helped support schools, organizations, individuals, orphanages, retirement homes, YWCA's and YMCA's.

I was born on August 18, 1994. I was forced upon a single mother, with three other kids. My siblings and I were all left with no father, but one strong African-American mother who knew how to give her kids the strength, faith and hope they needed to succeed. From the age of seven years old to the age ten, I was molested by a friend of the family. Even with the burden on my shoulders she managed to get through life with no regrets or revenge. Going through many different situations from not having food in my house to meeting new people that would just hurt me; I had one devoted mother who refused to let her children grow up being a "lost black child" in America. I only saw her father once when she was little. I thought about why God made her father-less and why every other little girl could be called daddy's little girl but not me. Was it the way the I looked, my mother or maybe it was him?

When I was only five years old I experienced a situation which could have changed my entire life. My oldest brother Michael was running away and Ethel (Her mother) and Ethel's boyfriend and I went looking for him. When we found him and were on our way home he was being lectured and- being the type of person he was- he didn't like it. I was very close to my brother, as Ethel was screaming and exiting the freeway, Michael jumped out of the car while I was hooked to his shirt. As they both were rolling on the freeway’s ground, I knew my mom could only think one thing ‘Are my children okay?!’ Even though this could have fatally hurt me, I survived. God put me on the earth and he wasn't going to take me out so quick. I have been through quite a bit but with the clear mind that she was given, nothing can stop her.
Everyone is put into the world for different reasons, some good and some not so good. It is that small group of people that can make a change.

I am is still in the process of growing up and, as I get older, looks around the world to see African-American women that came from nothing to becoming someone successful. I want to be as strong as my mother was and as wealthy and devoted as Madam CJ Walker was. I want to pass my lessons learned down to children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. I will be the first child of Ethel graduating from high school and the first to college. That is my success. Just knowing that what I am is doing, going to be the first to graduate, is of great importance. With the help and love of the strong people around me, I will make it and become someone that people look up to like Madam CJ Walker.

American Icons #4 conti.

*I hope that when someone reads my artist statement they see a difference, they will want to talk to me and ask questions about what they read and how they really feel.
*When I was sitting in front of my computer, I was thinking how I could put this together because I knew it would be hard trying to relate to someone so inspirational and so devotional. So I decided to make it a biograpghy of her then one of me, then relate the two together. And I think it's a very unique way of putting things together and it will be different then what other peopleare doing.

My first paragraph:

American Icons #4

I got critical feedback like:
* Work on your continuum and expand on that.
So I am going to try to work on that, because it coukd be unclear to the reader what I'm going to do to continue and pass my feelings on.

American Icons #3

Part One

I am talking about The Bloody East St. Race Riot that took place and how Madam CJ Wa lker tried to make lynching a federal law and what she did to do this and who helped.

Second I am talking about how I want to be in the spot Madam CJ Walker was, because looking at what she went through and what she accomplished I hink anybody would want to be in her spot. Coming from not having much at all and being abusived and then becoming a millionaire.

Part Two

I am using a biography websit that has very informative information.

Website

I'm also using information that I was given, but some of it wasn't alll true but I did get some facts in!

American Icons !

Jeniffer Hudson

1. She represents hard work and confidence, because she didn't win American Idol. But she still managed to win an Oscar in Dreamgirls, Being the leading actress even over Beyonce! To me that shows hard work and confidence.

2. I think I really liked her character and that's what made me turn my eyes to her and since then. I looked up to her!

3. She has spoke to so many different girls in many different ways, and not JUST American girls but all over the world!

Madam CJ Walker

1. Madam CJ represents cinfidence and wanting a change, because she was the twenthieth most successful entrepreneurs, She came from nothing to be somebody who people will look up to and want to be like someday.

2. She was a slave born on December 23, 1867 and orphaned at the age seven. She worked the cotton fields, when she was 14 years old she got married to Moses McWilliams to escape her abusive brother-in-law. She started in the worst possible position in America and moved on to speaking for every young black girl in america.

3. Madam CJ Walker became important to me because she moved from house to house, marring and being divorced until she met her third husband in Denver and as her hair started to fall out she came up with this homemade product that would STOP the hair from falling out. She is an inspiration because when I do pass on I want to be known like she was and my hair being the thing I love about myself makes me smile that people can come form totally NOTHING and make the best living!

Jane Enda Hunter

1. I found someone that I didn't really know much about and I found her, she was taught to read by the daughter of her employer. She founded The Working Girls Association which became the Phillis Wheatley Association the next year.

2. She inspired me because just like a lot of African American women she started from nothing and became such a big success!

Back to School !

1. This year I plan to work on my communication with my peers and teachers so that it will be easier to deal with things and work. Because I have learned in the past that if there is NO communication with the student and teacher, there will be a lack of learning. So I am going to do my best so I can turn in work that I am proud of.

2. I hope to learn about what I can deal with and what I can't, what I mean is I want to take honors and I am taking a big chance and possibly risk because, this experience might be something that I won't be able to accomplish. So in the future I will know how far to go because of this experience.

3.I actually think I am good at cooking, when I grew up I actually wanted to become a chef. But then I started to learn that wasn't where my heart should of been and I think that I should truing to make a difference in people's lives. Because I love to sit there and talk to people and listen to their problems and try to help them in any way that I can!

4. She also spoke to me because in the movie she is a thicker girl in a singing group and their manager tells her to be a backup singer because he wants Beyonce(a thinner girl) to sing lead. So I think in a way it relates to me because I feel like I am put
